The Work of an Orthodontist

People can only be recognized as orthodontists once they complete this formal education and can limit their scope of work to orthodontics only (unless they have completed specialty education in another dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association).
  • Orthodontists are uniquely qualified in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of orthodontic problems
  • Their aim is to ensure well-aligned teeth in children, teens, and adults that lets them smile better, bite, chew, and speak more effectively
  • Orthodontists recommend the best kind of appliance according to the needs of every individual patient's treatment goals. These appliances include braces, clear aligner trays, and retainers that can move teeth or hold them in their new positions
  • Orthodontists are eligible for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists
